Describe how testicular function is controlled by the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: Testicular function is controlled by hypothalamus-anterior pituitary axis. Hypothalamus
releases GnRH which stimulates anterior pituitary to release FSH and LH. LH acts on Leydig
cells to regulate testosterone secretion. FSH acts on Sertoli cells to enhance spermatogenesis.
Normal sperm production is dependent upon testosterone released by the Leydig cells and the
functions of Sertoli cells in regard to sperm development. So FSH and LH play important
roles in sperm production. Negative feedback from the testes to the anterior pituitary helps
regulate the hormonal levels.
