In your own words describe energy balance in terms of caloric intake compared to caloric expenditure
To achieve energy balance and thus maintain a stable weight, a healthy adult must consume the same amount of energy from food as he or she expends from day to day¾that is, balance calories in with calories out. If a person overeats, or is in a life stage involving growth (such as pregnancy or childhood), that person will be in positive energy balance (calories in > calories out) and accumulate more weight, either as fat or lean tissues. Conversely, a person taking in less energy than he or she expends on a day-to-day basis will develop a negative energy balance (calories in < calories out); this occurs during intentional weight loss or wasting due to illness.
