What are artifacts and how do artifacts communicate information nonverbally? Provide examples of artifacts you or someone you know uses to communicate nonverbally
What will be an ideal response?
Artifacts are clothing and other accessories that one wears or fills one's personal space with, often to project an intentional self-image. The clothing we wear and the way we decorate our space often says something about our personality, education, and social status. Those in power often set standards for what artifacts are seen as appropriate, and deemed valuable.
A friend of mine is a great example of how someone uses artifacts nonverbally. She is an eye doctor who always makes sure she wears a white lab coat while consulting with patients in order to legitimize her role as a doctor. She also has decorated her office with many framed diplomas and certifications to show that she is competent, licensed and a medical authority. Furthermore, she won a "who's who" doctors award and has a copy of the magazine, recognizing her as an excellent doctor, hanging in the lobby.
