The question has two parts; be sure to answer both. First, define bullying. Next, imagine that you are the manager of a local sandwich shop. One of your sandwich makers comes to you and says that the other employees are bullying her, making fun of her, teasing her, and harassing her on Facebook. Explain how you would combat and put a stop to the bullying.
What will be an ideal response?
Bullying is repeated mistreatment by one or more perpetrators. Bullying is abusive physical, psychological, verbal, or nonverbal behavior that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating.
As a manager, you should respond to all reports of bullying immediately. Perhaps your best strategy is to call a meeting of all staff members to indicate that bullying will not be tolerated and that you will call the police and report any offenders if you need to. This is a case where managers must clearly show their dedication to the company's values and emphasize that the company expects all employees to treat one another with dignity. You might say that if you receive any reports of bullying, or witness any bullying behavior either on or off the job (for example, on Facebook), you will fire the offender immediately.
