Scaffolding is related to Vygotsky’s notion of zone of proximal development (ZPD). It involves the assistance given to a child by adults and peers to help them learn and function independently. Examples will vary, but an example of how one might use scaffolding in the classroom is: A teacher might start by helping a student build a tower of blocks using a particular color scheme. The teacher may start by helping the child build the first row, supervise the second row, and then allow the child to build the third row independently.
