As with all investigations, the identification, collection, and preservation of evidence are the primary responsibility of the investigator. Rape cases are somewhat unique in that evidence may present itself in three general areas:
1. On the crime scene
2. On the victim
3. On the suspect (or at locations occupied by the suspect)
If the incident was fairly recent, a flash description of the suspect or his vehicle should be given to the dispatcher for possible broadcast. After the crime-scene investigation is under way, the investigator should determine if there is any physical evidence to be collected.
As early as possible, clothing should be collected from the victim and preserved for laboratory analysis. Other types of evidence that should be considered are bed sheets, mattress, towels and washrags, discarded facial tissues, robes, and sofa or chair cushions.
