How big a problem is poverty around the world as compared to the United States? What is used as a "measuring stick" to track poverty levels?

What will be an ideal response?

About one in six Americans struggles to have enough to eat consistently. Many live paycheck to paycheck, especially since the Great Recession began. Still, America is doing very well compared to most countries. The measure for absolute poverty around the world is the equivalent of having US$1.25 per day. This is what it takes to simply survive. Around 20% of the world's population is poor by this measure, which is almost unimaginable in the United States. Absolute poverty often results in severe malnutrition, preventable and treatable diseases, and poor overall health, resulting in human suffering and death. As you can see, poverty is about much more than low income. The United Nations has developed the Multidimensional Poverty Index to measure deprivation. It takes into account health (e.g., nutrition and infant mortality), education (e.g., amount of schooling), and living standards (e.g., water, toilets, electricity, and flooring in residence). Based on this index, countries in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and poorer areas of Latin America especially struggle with multidimensional poverty.
