There are four primary methods of speech delivery. In a well-developed essay, identify the four methods. Then provide two advantages and two disadvantages connected to using each method
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Advantages and disadvantages will vary, but answer should include the four methods of speech delivery: manuscript, memorized, impromptu, and extemporaneous.
The manuscript method is done by reading word for word directly from a written speech. Advantages include insurance against forgetting part of the speech, useful for its preciseness in times of crisis or in statements to the press by government or business leaders, the ability to choose words very carefully when dealing with sensitive and critical issues. Disadvantages include this being a poor way to deliver a speech, it rarely being done well enough to be interesting, and it taking considerable skill and practice to make the message sound interesting.
The memorized method involves memorizing a speech. Advantages include allowing maximum eye contact with the audience, the speaker being able to move around freely, and it being useful for occasions such as accepting an award, introducing a speaker, making announcements, or delivering brief remarks. Disadvantages include it sounding stiff, stilted, mechanical, and overrehearsed; the risk that the speaker will forget parts of their speech and end up awkwardly searching for words in front of the audience; and a lack of ability to make on-the-spot adaptations.
The impromptu method is presenting a speech on the spot. Advantages include informal speaking, being able to easily adapt the speech to the audience, and the ability to maintain direct eye contact with the audience. Disadvantages include a lack of logical organization and thorough research, the speech being unimpressive, and a necessity to be careful with exactly how much is said, especially where controversial, sensitive, or classified topics are concerned.
The extemporaneous method results from a speaker writing and memorizing a general outline, knowing the key ideas and their organization, but not having the speech memorized word-for-word. Advantages include conversational style, the speech being well organized and researched, and the audience having the impression the speech is being created as they listen to it. Disadvantages include it taking time to prepare as well as needing skill to deliver the speech well.
