The five suggestions for researching a topic are as follows: 1) Develop your research questions and identify your key terms; decide what kind of information you want and what words or phrases you need to search online. 2) Examine what you know; write down what you already know from reading materials, websites, or personal experiences; jot down names of people who might know something about the topic. 3) Begin with a general overview: get an authoritative but broad overview from an article in a book, magazine, or encyclopedia. 4) Consult increasingly specific sources: find more information from detailed and specialized sources, often provided through references or links. 5) Keep an eye out for supporting materials: look for statistics and quotes, audio and video clips, charts and graphs, and photos and other images; save all of these in your speech file.
