Granulomas are an inflammation in the body caused by tissue irritation and it may prevent normal movement of laryngeal cartilages. This condition will resolve without any treatment if the individual doses not try to compensate for his or her weak voice by increasing tension. A papilloma is a wart„like growth that can obstruct the airway and it caused by a virus. Papillomas are surgically removed but they tend to reoccur. Carcinoma, or cancer, of the larynx has been associated with smoking, environmental irritants, metabolic disturbances, and other unknown causes. Treatments for laryngeal cancer include chemotherapy, laryngeal radiation, or partial or complete laryngectomy. For individuals who undergo a laryngectomy they no longer have vocal folds to create sound. Therefore, other methods of communication are required.
