Karl Marx identified a recurring process in human history. He said that each thesis, or current arrangement in power, contained its own antithesis, or contradiction. A struggle develops between the thesis and antithesis, leading to a synthesis which is a new arrangement of power. The new social order becomes a thesis that will be challenged by its own antithesis.
