Explain the positive and negative effects of both converging and diverging.

What will be an ideal response?

The positive effects of converging include increased interpersonal attraction;
social approval; and the increased ability for persuasion. Two negative outcomes
of convergence include the perception of in-group members as being
condescending, unfairly or incorrectly stereotyping the out-group, and the loss of
personal identity. On the flip side, divergence can have positive effects as well.
Divergence may help to protect one’s cultural identity and it helps the diverger to
assert his/her power or status difference. However, divergence can have
negative outcomes such as perceived lack of effort, perceived disdain for the out-
group, and an increased psychological distance.
