I. In December, General Lord Cornwallis captured New Jersey and forced Gen Washington to withdraw across Delaware River into Pennsylvania. At day break, a fog engulfed the area to hide the rebels from British sight. IV. Washington entrenched in Pennsylvania for the winter. Soldiers' morale was low and desertion was rampant.
