What steps do jails take to reduce the likelihood of suicide by inmates?

What will be an ideal response?

• First, jails do a preliminary screening upon an offender's entry to the jail to determine whether there are immediate concerns about an attempted suicide. This is critical, as 48 percent of all jail suicides occur during the first week following admission. Most jails have suicide prevention programs. Inmates who indicate some risk during the assessment are noted and receive specific counseling from mental health professionals regarding their thoughts of suicide. All staff members receive training on the signs of potential suicide among inmates.
