You tell L.W. there are two types of abortions, vacuum aspiration and medical abortion. How

would you explain the difference to her?

What will be an ideal response?

Vacuum aspiration can be done through the 12th week of pregnancy. A local anesthetic is used to
numb the cervix, a narrow tube is inserted through the cervix, and the embryo or fetus is removed
with vacuum suction. This process takes about 5 minutes, during which time the patient will
experience cramping. Medical abortion is available through the 9th week of pregnancy. It involves
the use of two medications, one that stops the growth of the embryo or fetus and causes it to detach
from the uterine wall. The second causes uterine contractions that expel the embryo or fetus. A
woman might bleed for 1 to 2 weeks with the medical abortion and might experience moderate to
severe cramps.
