Rule-driven theories of concept learning suggest that we learn concepts according to rules defining specific characteristics, such as the rule that says that a square is a plane figure that has four equal sides and four equal angles. Exemplar theory says that people construct exemplars—highly representative members—of concepts, such as an eagle, robin, hawk, sparrow, and hummingbird being exemplars for the concept bird.
