Explain the expression "the environment as a commons".
What will be an ideal response?
The natural environment can be viewed as a "commons" as it is a resource which has been used as though it belongs to everyone in society. Business has been able to use shared resources such as the environment simply because it wanted or needed to. In the past, for example, pollution was put into the environment without thinking about the damage and any or with little regulation existed to prevent it. Through uncontrolled use, many in society believed that environment as a commons was being destroyed. Often this destruction was occurring even though it was not the intent of the user, that is business, and ownership was not an issue.
