Explain the key provisions of the Wagner Act of 1935.
What will be an ideal response?
The Wagner Act was intended to create a "free and dignified" worker who has sufficient bargaining power to negotiate as an equal with a similarly "free and dignified" employer. The main provision of the Act is Section 7(a) which protects the right to self-organization, to join or form a union, and to assist labor unions. It further protects the right to bargain collectively with an employer through representatives of the employees' own choosing as well as the right to engage in other "concerted activities" for the purpose of aiding or protecting fellow workers. The Wagner Act outlines specific unfair labor violations of employers - acts that will be considered illegal in the course of the employment relationship. In addition, it provided a mechanism for determining union recognition and enforcing the law through an independent agency (the NLRB).
