No Child Left Behind Act
As this book went to press, the Congress of the United States was in the process of reauthorizing the (NCLB). In an essay, describe to a community citizen the major aspects of the Act and the reasons the bill was passed. Then discuss ways it is already affecting you and will continue to do so. Finally, propose some substantive changes to strengthen the law and explain your rationale for making those suggestions.
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Scoring guide:
Key elements that should appear in an appropriate response:
* The discussion of the NCLB Act should address the topic so it can be understood by an individual citizen who is not an educator. Thus, "educationese" should be avoided if full credit is to be awarded. The discussion must include each major component of the Act as well as the need for each part of the law.
* To answer the second part of the assignment, the student must explain both current and future ways in which the law impacts him or her, giving at least two examples of each.
* The final assignment requires the student to evaluate the value and effectiveness of the various aspects of the Act in terms of what he or she already knows from Chapters 1 through 3 and education experience and then to offer at least two important recommendations for improving the Act. To receive full credit, the student must also explain clearly why each of the recommendations is being advanced.
