What is cloze and what might be its role in building comprehension? What are some variations of this method?

What will be an ideal response?

The cloze procedure involves a selection of text with blank spaces. The reader fills in missing words and is forced to use semantic, syntactic, and symbol-sound information. It promotes comprehension (particularly for students who miss meaning in their efforts to sound out words) by predicting meaning, using background knowledge, and making inferences. In classic close, the first and last sentences are left intact and no proper nouns are removed, but other words are deleted. Variations include oral cloze (teacher pauses while reading), word masking (teacher covers a word on second reading), and modified cloze (choices are given for missing words).
