Language deficiencies may be noted in children with a variety of disabilities. Discuss one language problem that you might expect to observe in a child with: (a) intellectual disabilities (b) learning disabilities (c) emotional or behavioral disorders (d) autism spectrum disorder

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: (Answers will vary; sample answers include the following)
Intellectual disabilities: Language acquisition is somewhat slower than in typical learners; during the school years, spoken language may display some qualitative differences as well, with the speech being less complex and fluent; articulation problems may be identified; reading skills may be restricted.
Learning disabilities: Problems in receptive and/or expressive language are common, including specific deficits in some or all of the following: slow development of speech, articulation problems, handwriting difficulties, written expression differences or delays, and problems with listening comprehension, reading decoding, and reading comprehension; spelling is often very difficult.
Emotional or behavioral disorders: Frequently these learners display problems in pragmatic language; they have difficulty appropriately expressing their wants and needs; use of unacceptable language (profanity) may be present; they may be argumentative, failing to take into account the effect of their communication; behavior problems may appear to be related to literacy skills although it is difficult at times to determine which came first.
autism spectrum disorder: depending on the severity of the condition, the mechanical use of language may be unimpaired or nonexistent; pragmatic/social language skills are generally awkward, and the learner often does not match communication to the context.
