Perspective taking involves acknowledging the viewpoints of others and while not assuming that you already know about their experiences. As an exercise in perspective taking, choose a prominent person or group that you personally disagree with and attempt to take their perspective on a subject. Illustrate how you might do this.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary, but students should demonstrate ability to set aside their assumptions and attempt to understand the other person or group’s viewpoint. For instance, a pacifist student may choose to write about the late senator, John McCain, who espoused very hawkish views on war. He was aggressive with US enemies, such as Iran, and voted for the war in Iraq. However, McCain was a prisoner during the Vietnam War, who experienced torture that left him with lifelong physical disabilities--an experience that very few citizens share. It is easy to understand McCain’s worldview in light of his experiences.
