Write the formula for linear regression and explain each component.
What will be an ideal response?
The most basic formula for a line is Y = a + bX. Y is the value on the Y-axis that we are trying to predict. a is the Y-intercept, the point at which the line crosses the Y-axis. b is the slope, also known as “rise divided by run.” For each increase in unit on the X-axis, there is a corresponding increase on the Y-axis. Statisticians refer to b as the unstandardized regression coefficient. Note that beta is the same as b except that it is expressed in units of standard deviation. Statisticians refer to beta as the standardized regression coefficient.
