To examine a patient for Murphy's sign, palpate below the liver margin at the lateral border of the rectus muscle and then ask the patient to take a deep breath. Murphy's sign is present when the patient

a. complains of pain with palpation.
b. complains of pain in the right lower quadrant.
c. adducts the leg.
d. complains of pain in the left shoulder.

A
Normally, palpating the liver causes no pain. In a patient with inflammation of the gallbladder, or cholecystitis, pain occurs. Palpate below the liver margin at the lateral border of the rectus muscle. Have the patient take a deep breath. A normal response is for the patient to complete the breath without pain. The patient may stop inhaling to guard against the pain. This is known as Murphy's sign.
