Parents and caregivers play a particular role in the first two stages, although teachers are increasingly important in stages of initiative and industry, as they provide a climate in which risks can be taken and success/competence is achieved. Parents and peers play roles in identity and intimacy, but adolescents and young adults play a more active role in resolution of these stages, and the final two stages are based on the individual’s own processes.
