hat could cause an unplanned termination? What will you do when you are faced with a termination that wasn’t planned?

What will be an ideal response?

?Things do not always work out the way we would like. Sometimes clients do not or cannot complete the commitment made to counseling and quit before the agreed-upon time.
?This may happen for any number of reasons. Personal client issues or certain real-life factors may impinge on a client’s ability to continue. A client may move away, or a parent may discontinue a child’s involvement in some school-sponsored counseling program. Clients may get sick, or may even die. Sometimes clients are simply not particularly invested in counseling and drop out for no apparent reason.
?These kinds of abrupt endings can leave a counselor with all kinds of unresolved feelings. Sometimes a client will abruptly tell you that things are great, much better, and that she doesn’t feel a need to continue. This so-called “flight into health” usually takes place just as the counseling work is getting really interesting and probably quite scary to her because of its closeness to some touchy issues.
?Whenever possible, encourage your client to talk about the factors that are leading to a consideration to end counseling prematurely. Try to avoid being manipulated into extending a session’s length to address a last-minute declaration of stopping, but do what you can to make provision for a next appointment to discuss the client’s reasons for thinking about ending.
