• For some families and among some cultures, having a child with a disability brings shame to the nuclear as well as extended family, and parents may not wish to acknowledge the child by attending a school meeting.
• Also when a father and mother do attend an IEP meeting, but do not initiate conversation or question any decisions made by the professionals, teachers may view this as a lack of caring or involvement, whereas the parents view it as a sign of respect.
