Explain some cultural traits that are important for police to be aware of, and why understanding cultural customs is important for police officers

What will be an ideal response?

It is essential for police to understand cultural traits or there can be negative consequences involving the people they confront. As examples, repeatedly waving one's finger back and forth is an insult to an Ethiopian. During an argument, it would not be uncommon for a Mexican American to shout to his friend, "I'm going to kill you if you do that again." In the context of the Latino/Hispanic culture, this simply conveys anger. For the Chinese, causing someone to lose face through disrespect – such as not being able to use both hands to convey an object – is one of the worst things one person can do to another. For Latinos/Hispanics, the concept of masculine superiority and the dominance of the father in the family are important. The police should understand these concepts, and pre-service and in-service police training should cover cultural differences.
