Explain what a credential society is and why it develops

A credential society is one in which employers use diplomas and degrees to determine who is eligible for a job. A major reason for the development of credentialism in a society is industrialization which results in increased urbanization and larger populations. The consequence is an increase in anonymity. Employers lack personal knowledge about potential employees. Educational certification is assumed to provide evidence of a person's ability and responsibility.
