Controversy continues for Australia regarding the government’s interactions with the Aboriginal people. For example, the Australian Parliament believed that the money allocated to help separated families was not enough. They recommended compensating families that had been forcibly separated. However, the Australian government formally rejected that recommendation in 2001 (“Australian Government,” 2001).
Part of the reason for the controversy surrounding the family-separation issue is a matter of definition. In a 1997 report, Australia’s Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission called the forced removal of Aboriginal children an act of genocide. Two months after that report was released, however, the High Court of Australia disagreed. They ruled on a suit filed by several Aboriginals who had been separated from their families as children, ruling unanimously that the separations were not an act of genocide (Zan, 1997).
Regardless of the various laws and definitions of events, the Aboriginal people have had one basic request that for many years went unanswered: that the Australian federal government issue an apology. On February 13, 2008, their request was finally answered. Thousands of Aboriginal Australians gathered in the nation’s capital to watch the new Prime Minister Kevin Rudd deliver a formal apology in a speech to the Australian Parliament and to the nation. Saying that the Australian government was sorry for the past wrongs caused by successive governments on the indigenous Aboriginal population, the Prime Minister said, “We apologize for the laws and policies of successive parliaments and government that have inflicted profound grief, suffering, and loss on these, our fellow Australians” (Macintyre, 2016, p. 5; BBC News, 2008).
