Occurs with the counselor, client, and client’s family. Purpose is to help the client understand the foundation of the brain and etiology of addiction, with hopes of it reducing feelings of shame and increase one’s desire to become active in their recovery. Another purpose is to educate family members and helping them understand that addiction is a biological process and to shift anger and resentment that they are often feeling away from the individual living with the addiction. It also allows family to become aware of their own predisposition to addiction. Psychoeducation also occurs to discuss treatment options and how it works.
