Ans: IEPs should be crafted around the principles and purposes of multicultural education in an effort to create a supportive climate for learning. Instructional strategies identified in the IEP should “exhibit culturally appropriate cues and reinforcements as well as culturally appropriate motivation and relevance.” They must consider the content, the instructional environment, and student behaviors, and how these elements reciprocally interact and are influenced by the student’s linguistic and cultural heritage. IEPs should reflect goals and instructional strategies that are appropriate to the student’s disability while also reflecting his or her language status.
