How did researchers evaluate the accuracy of criminal profiling, and what results did they get?
What will be an ideal response?
Researchers took all available facts about a series of arson crimes and presented these facts to professional criminal profilers, police officers, undergraduate students, and others. Then they asked each participant to answer a series of multiple-choice questions about the person who committed the crime, using only questions for which an objective answer was in fact known. The result was that everyone answered more items correctly than could be expected by random guessing, but no one did much better than guessing. The professional profilers did slightly better than other groups, but no group was accurate enough to be clearly useful in aiding an investigation.
