Over the lifetime of a body cell, it undergoes cell division about 100 times to replace other worn-out cells. The erosion of telomeres in the chromosome records each division. During the 100 times a cell duplicates, a few cases of mistakes in DNA replication can occur. Most of the time, the mistake is repaired or the cell is dysfunctional and dies. Occasionally, an uncorrected mistake in the "off" switch for duplication occurs, so the cell continues to multiply itself into a tumor. The tumor might also perpetuate itself by producing telomerase, which keeps the telomeres from eroding. The type of cell forming the tumor usually determines whether it will be benign or malignant.
