Describe the pattern of spontaneous recovery in children that occurs from onset to approximately 5 years post onset
What will be an ideal response?
A preschooler who has begun to stutter has a 65% to 80% chance of natural recovery by 3 to 5 years following the onset of stuttering. During the first year of onset, about 9% naturally recover and 22% naturally recover during the second year of onset. By 5 years post onset, 80% of the children will naturally recover while 20% will continue stuttering and will require some form of intervention. Some biological factors that contribute to spontaneous recovery include gender and family history. Research shows that females spontaneously recover more than males. Also, children who have family members who have recovered from stuttering have a 65% chance of natural recovery. Children 7 to 12 months post onset, who ultimately recover, begin to show decreased numbers of stuttering during the first year post stuttering onset and this continues until full recovery occurs.
