What experiences did Glen Haywood, Megan’s supervisor in the Eastern Michigan District Office of the U.S. Probation Department, bring to his position as supervisor? What style of supervision did he use with the officers on his staff?

While working as a probation officer for the U.S. District Courts, Megan Romanowski, BSW, was given the task of supervising parolee Robert Sanchez. Robert adjusted well to the community setting—he had a stable job and living situation—and even developed a good working relationship with Megan. But when Robert was involved in another robbery, Megan was forced to make a decision about what to recommend to the judge regarding his sentence.

Glen Haywood, MSW, served as a federal officer for more than 20 years. He served on the front lines for nearly 15 years in New York City before he moved to the Eastern Michigan District Office and was promoted to supervised release unit supervisor. He supervised 13 officers who held various degrees, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work and criminal justice.
Glen was a supportive supervisor who took a hands-off approach because the officers he supervised had so much experience. He usually played the role of “devil’s advocate” when his officers approached him with a difficult decision about a case recommendation. This forced his officers to think critically and to explain the reasons for their recommendations. Because he was so protective of his officers, and on occasion did err on the side of being overprotective, the officers frequently joked about Glen and his role as the “protective father.”
