Describe the relationship of the 3-Stage Approach for Generating Organizational Change to Kotter’s 8-Step Model of Planned Change.

The general principles of the 3-Stage Approach (unfreeze, change, and refreeze) have been elaborated by John Kotter into a widely used 8-step change model. Kotter’s first three steps (sense of urgency, forming a powerful coalition, and creating vision) suggest ways to unfreeze from the current state and get people mobilized for change. Steps four to six (communicate the vision, remove obstacles, and create short-term wins) are ways that a leader can implement the change. The final two steps (build the change and anchor the change in the culture) are ways that leaders can refreeze or sustain the change.
