post-traumatic stress disorder is a response to a stressful event or situation of an exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature. Symptoms include nightmares or flashbacks, memory loss relating to the event, sleep disorders, and difficulty controlling emotions. PTSD has also been associated with negative physical outcomes, including heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes, chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, and autoimmune disorders. In order to treat PTSD, officers may partake in psychotherapy, specifically cognitive–behavior therapy. Drug therapy may also be helpful as is counseling.
