Suggestions for including a child with disabilities or other special needs:
a . Learn about the child by talking with his or her family members. They will be your best source of information about the child's strengths, needs, and challenges. Be sure to listen carefully to family members and others who know the child.
b. Consult with the child's doctor, therapists, and former teachers for additional information. Find out whether the child is taking medication and any side effects that might be an issue. Ask what special classes or therapy services the child participates in and find out any precautions, limitations, or requirements you should know about.
c. Maintain regular communication with the family and other specialists who are working with the child.
d. Find out what services will be available to support your work with the child.
e. Brainstorm with the experts and consultants on how you can best support the child's development.
f. Be careful not to make judgments based on first impressions. Get to know the child and be sure to look for strengths and abilities.
g. Ask yourself: "How can I make classroom routines and activities relevant to this child and also meet the needs of the other children?"
h. Be patient—some children may need to be told or shown many times.
i. Be flexible and open to learning new things about children and about yourself.
