There are other white blood cells that engulf and destroy foreign particles such as bacteria in the body. These cells need to be replenished on a regular basis, so the diet must supply enough protein and vitamins to allow for the development of functional white blood cells. People who lack either protein or vitamins may not produce enough white blood cells to protect their body from infection.
