Some form of education has existed for a number of millennia. Describe the major aspects of the ancient Greek and Roman approaches to education. Next, describe education as it existed in general in the early colonial years. Finally, compare and contrast the two ancient with the more "modern" approaches to education, focusing on purposes and ways of delivering education.

* The first assignment is met satisfactorily when the student provides a broad overview of the Greek and Roman approaches to education and describes some colonial aspects of the approach to education. Points may be added or deducted based on the inclusion of the major aspects of education for each of the broad time periods.
* The second part of the assignment expects the student to summarize the highlights of education as it existed in various ways during the colonial period. Full credit is based on identification of the major features of colonial education.
* The third part of the assignment requires the student to (a) compare Greek and Roman approaches with those of the colonies and (b) contrast the approaches. Full credit for this part requires that the student note similarities and differences and include the purposes of education and the ways it was provided.
