Discuss the multicultural positives of existential therapy.
What will be an ideal response?
The existential view of being-in-the-world has particular significance for multicultural counseling. Vontress et al. (1999) emphasize being with another person (Mitwelt) in ways that respect cultural uniqueness (Ümwelt). They contend that counseling must use all four dimensions of existentialism—Eigenwelt (the individual), Mitwelt (social relations), Ümwelt (which consists of the client’s culture), and Überwelt (spirituality). Spirituality or Überwelt is critical to understanding the person and his or her culture. For instance, Japanese culture is anchored in Buddhist and Shinto spiritual dimensions. One advantage of the existential approach is that it provides a basis for examining how a client’s culture and social relations have influenced his or her behavior. Clients can examine to what extent their choices in life are affected by their culture and other group relations. They can explore culture influences on their being-in-the-world. Conversely, the existential approach can be criticized for being too individualistic.
