Differentiate between the legal and educational definitions of visual impairment
What will be an ideal response?
"Legal blindness" is defined by quantitative measures of acuity (the distance at and clarity with which a person can see something) and field of vision (the area around them which a person can visually detect when looking straight ahead). A person is legally blind if she has an acuity of 20/200 or worse even with glasses or a field of vision of less than 20 degrees. Educationally, IDEA considers students to qualify for services as "visually impaired" if their vision problems, even with correction, adversely affect their educational performance. It is possible to be "legally blind," but require few, if any, special services in the classroom beyond accommodations like sitting near the front of the classroom. Students with low vision primarily rely on vision for learning. Those who are functionally blind typically use braille for reading and writing, but may use their vision for other tasks
