Concurrent with obesity is a disproportionately high rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus among African Americans—twice the rate of diabetes and twice the number of incidents of complications compared to whites. There is a genetic predisposition for type 2 diabetes mellitus, but also a significant relationship with lifestyle factors such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and westernized dietary habits.
