There are four ways that assessment is used in early childhood special education: (1) screening, (2) eligibility, (3) individual program planning and implementation, and (4) progress monitoring and evaluation. Assessment for screening purposes is used to evaluate a child's current level of development, whereas an eligibility screening may be used to judge whether a child needs early intervention services. Assessments used for program planning and implementation are used after eligibility is determined, and assessment for progress monitoring occurs regularly to see how children are progressing and to determine if changes need to made to current programs and services provided to a child.
