Why do governments and defendants enter into plea bargains?

What will be an ideal response?

The government engages in plea bargaining to save costs, avoid the risks of a trial, and prevent further overcrowding of the prisons. In return, the government agrees to impose a lesser penalty or sentence on the accused than might have been obtained had the case gone to trial and the accused found guilty. The accused often agrees to a plea bargain to avoid the risks of trial where if he or she was found guilty, he or she would be subject to a greater penalty than the penalty imposed by the plea bargain he or she has agreed to with the government.
