Where are adhesives used?

Adhesives also employ chemical-bonding principles. Although natural adhesives have been used for centuries, modern developments led to the invention of very strong synthetic adhesives. These adhesives are used to glue ceramic tile on the space shuttle, the rearview mirror on automobile windshields, and assembled furniture and utility pipes. Some materials, such as thermoset plastics, can only be fastened by adhesives.

Modern adhesives are used to fasten metal, plastics, ceramics, leather, paper and cardboard, wood, and nearly any other material. Adhesives may prove to be an excellent material-fastening technique for many design applications. They are often stronger than the material itself and, if applied carefully, will provide a very clean joint.
