What are the implications of the assimilation and integration of lesbians and gay men?

Assimilationists argue that lesbians and gay men should be just like everybody else because cultural separation occurs only when society stigmatizes a group. Further, many argue that if gay men and lesbians become too mainstream, what it means to be gay will be lost. In terms of integration, answers will vary, but should include components of the following: Integration would allow for acceptance as society begins to remove stigmas. But, instead of assimilation, where some are concerned what it means to be gay will be lost, integration will allow individuals to keep their unique subgroup identities while still being accepted in the large community and world.
