Ans: Social support refers to the resources that we get from other people in times of need or crisis. Social support includes one’s social network, family members, friends, etc. There are different types of social support. They include emotional support, esteem support, tangible or instrumental support, informational support, and network support.
We get emotional support from others, who provide us with love, empathy, and security. When others let us know that we are valued for our personal qualities and ideas and are accepted despite our faults, we receive esteem support. Practical help that we receive from others, such as having them lend us money, give us rides, and help out with our chores, is referred to as tangible or instrumental support. Informational support refers to getting advice, suggestions, or feedback from others and is especially helpful when we are in a situation or are encountering a problem that is new to us. Finally, we get network support when we feel a sense of membership in a group that shares our interests or provides us with social companionship.
