• There is a relationship between legitimacy and political behavior in criminal justice organizations. The political process is not an inherently bad process for criminal justice administrators.
• Political behavior can exist in organizations as a result of lack of consensus regarding goals, disagreement over means to achieve goals, and anxiety about resource allocations.
• The political process is how things are accomplished by criminal justice organizations. The political process, in part, defines both mission and vision for criminal justice organizations
• Using prisons as an example, it has been suggested by many researchers that prisons are prime breeding grounds not only for the political behavior but also for the dysfunctional behaviors associated with coercive and reward types of power. It is has been noted that both inmates and corrections staff, suffering from learned helplessness, ultimately withdraw from the institution in either a psychological or a physical sense.
